Welcome to the official website of the Seafares in Europe - Action towards Equality
A few words about the project
Commercial Marine is a branch of activity, which plays an important role in the economy of many EU countries. Twenty two out of 27 EU member states have sea borders, including passenger fleets. Seafarers face serious problems e.g. intercultural environment, threat of employment, low women representation, stress caused by various reasons including new technologies. Due to their job they face obstacles in participating as active citizens.
SEA project aims at bringing together the most powerful seafarers’ trade union in Greece with organisations and interested parties in the UK (I-WHO research Institute, University of Nottingham) and Cyprus in order to exchange experiences, opinions and values, to learn form history and work out concrete results, projecting a better future.
The main topics that are investigated by the project are the following:
- European Active Citizenship
- Intercultural dialogue
- Employment opportunities and threats in the maritime sector
- Equal opportunities
SEA project is co-financed by the European Union within the programme “Europe for Citizens” 2007-2013 program of the European Commission. The aim of this programme is to bring Europe closer to its citizens and to enable them to participate fully in the European construction. Through this programme, citizens have the opportunity to be involved in transnational exchanges and cooperation activities, contributing to developing a sense of belonging to common European ideals and encouraging the process of European integration.
