Stress Prevention Activities - Project report

Masters and Mates Union  of the Greek Merchant Marine (PEPEN), sensitised in the subjects of health, coordinates the European project SPA (Stress Prevention Activities), in collaboration with other institutions of the European Community. The project is supported by the Leonardo Da Vinci programme of the European Commission. In the project are participating organizations from Greece, UK, Finland and Czech Republic.

Stress in the work place

Stress is in our days one of the most important labour dangers and concerns a big portion of workers from all the sectors. Scientific studies have shown that stress is responsible for a lot of illnesses as myoskeleton diseases, lumbagos, cardiovascular diseases, depression and other. However beyond the illnesses it has also repercussions in the quality of worker's life and leads often to lack of concentration, weakness in decision-making, low performance, social isolation, personality disturbances etc.

The detection and the confrontation of stress-related factors in the working environment are of vital importance policy of the European Community, for the creation of suitable working environment and the improvement of quality of worker's life.

The SPA Project

The project aims at the growth and promotion of a methodology for the effective estimation and prevention of stress that is related with the working environment, the altered conditions and the continuing training. The project will be materialised in seamen and in workers in small to medium-sized enterprises and training organisations.

In the frames of the project have already been developed:

  • A training curriculum along with educational material for the estimation and prevention of the stress effects.

The training curriculum concern three different sectors:

    • Seamen
    • Workers in small to medium-sized enterprises
    • Trainers and Trainees

        The educational material includes:

    • A handbook
    • 6 Case studies
    • 3 Role-play games
    • A CD-ROM
    • A Trainer's guide

It's also expected to be realised some pilot trainings in Greece, UK, Finland and Czech Republic.

The training material has already been developed in English and at the moment is being translated in Greek, Finnish, and Czech.
